Millsap's Backup

As the free agent frenzy begins Wednesday night here in Utah, the biggest question on every Jazz fan's mind is what will happen with Carlos Boozer. There is no question that when healthy, Boozer has been an all-star caliber player for the Jazz; over the years the only problem has been keeping him healthy.

Now Boozer has the opportunity to leave Utah through free agency. Boozer can go to the highest bidder if he so chooses. That also means that Boozer can leave Utah and the Jazz may not get anything in return.

Fortunately for the Jazz, if Boozer were to leave, they already have his replacement in house. Paul Millsap is prepared and ready to take over as the starting power forward for the Jazz.

The fear for the Jazz should not be who is going to replace Boozer if he leaves; the bigger question should be, who is going to step into Millsap's role. When Millsap came off the bench for Boozer, there was not much of a drop-off production wise. In fact, the Jazz were better on defense with Millsap in the line up.

Now that Millsap may be in the starting line up, who is going to be the man backing him up. The logical person on the roster as of today would be Andrei Kirilenko. Kirilenko's natural position is power forward. The other person that needs to step-up and could have an increased role on the team this year is Kosta Koufos. Koufos has potential; he just needs to gain the confidence.

Free agency should be interesting. And who knows, maybe the Jazz will land Millsap's back up through free agency. Whether that person is already on the Jazz roster or a newcomer, they will have pretty big shoes to fill.
