Jazz New Players

The Utah Jazz finally made a splash yesterday in trading for forward/center Al Jefferson. Utah had to give up two future first round picks and Kosta Koufos. Jefferson should step in and help fill the void left behind when Carlos Boozer left for Chicago.

Swapping Boozer for Jefferson was a smart move for the Jazz. Jefferson is an accomplished and proven scorer in the NBA. Jefferson is at least two inches taller than Boozer and four years younger. Jefferson did have a major knee injury two years ago, but at 25 years of age, he is worth the gamble. Even though he may go through growing pains at first, he should step in and be the new starting center for the Jazz.

The Jazz didn't stop there, today they announced they will sign guard and former Jazz man Raja Bell. Bell cancelled his meeting with Lakers guard Kobe Bryant to say he will sign with the Jazz for three years at $10 million. Bell gives the Jazz a solid perimeter defender and good outside shooter. Some other significant factor to Bell signing with the Jazz is that Utah took away a player that a rival team was pursuing pretty hard and they got a player that really wanted to be in Utah.

The signing of Bell means the Jazz will not match the offer sheet that guard Wesley Matthews signed with the Portland Trailblazers last week. Although Matthews is the younger of the two, Bell will bring many of the same skills to the court with more experience but at less cost.

So it took the Jazz a little while to get get started this off season, but in the last two days, the Jazz have made two solid moves.
